Orchard Park High School

Ramadan commences

This week's assemblies focused on Ramadan.

Ramadan

This week's assemblies, delivered by Mr Mathys, focused on Ramadan. He explained to students the significance of Ramadan, why it is a special time and the practices that Muslims engage in. All students are encouraged to be supportive of the Muslim members of our community. During Ramadan, students can spend their lunchtime with Ms Yassin in E6, reading and discussing the Quran. The prayer spaces will be available as usual.

Year 11 PPEs

Year 11 have made a brilliant start to their final round of Pre-Public Examinations. They have completed their MFL speaking exams with confidence, produced outstanding work in their Art and Photography exams, and successfully completed their first written papers in English and Sociology. A huge well done to our Health and Fitness students who also successfully completed their synoptic project this week. Students' exam conduct has been exemplary, with Ms Hyde and the invigilators commending their efforts – one invigilator even described them as the 'best year group ever’. It has also been fantastic to see many students making the most of the Breakfast Revision session from 8.00am, using this valuable time for a short burst of revision before heading into their exam warm-ups with their subject teachers. Well done – keep up the great work.

International Women's Day

For International Women's Day, on Friday 7th March, there will be a bake sale to raise funds for Plan UK. All donations of cakes would be most welcome. The art department is also running a competition. Students are encouraged to create an artwork about women’s rights or about a woman that inspires them. The deadline for this is Friday 7 March. Please give your entries to Ms Pain.

Sports fixtures update – netball

Year 7 played their second ever school netball game and, despite a winning first and last quarter performance, went on to lose by one goal, captained by Pier, who was also selected as the player of the match. Year 8 lost to Coloma 8-4, but despite this disappointing result, we recognise Ayanna who recently swapped positions to shooting and Shalika who was Coloma's player of the match. Year 9 was the stand-out performance, winning throughout the four quarters, but in the dying seconds of the match conceded a goal to the opposition, finishing the match on a draw. Amara was picked as the players’ performer.

Sports fixtures update – football

On Tuesday, our Year 10 boys played Coombe Wood School in a football fixture. The performance on display was immense. We started by taking the lead, thanks to Malachi’s goal. Alex and A’Shyah worked together to tip it past the keeper. In the last seconds, we managed to win a corner which was crossed in by Aurio, and Malachi scored in the top corner, winning 3-2. An honourable mention goes to Malachi for scoring two goals and Joe for putting in a huge performance in the second half.

Sports fixtures update – rugby

On Thursday, a group of Year 8/9s played Oasis Shirley Park. A moment of brilliance by Alfie broke through a tackle to score the first try of the game. Once the second half began, we started off extremely well, but a carefully planned move undid this as Oasis scored their first try. We defended valiantly but, unfortunately, came away with the loss. A special mention goes to Alfie and Emeka, as well as Tommy, who hadn’t played rugby before this and put in a stellar performance.

Have a lovely (sunny!) weekend.
