Orchard Park High School

Building students' communication skills

60 of our Year 10 students participated in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge this week and our Big Speech was launched.

This week, in our house assemblies, House Leaders launched The Big Speech Competition. The theme this year is inspired by Gandhi’s famous words ‘Be The Change’, encouraging everyone to think about how they can make a difference in our community or the world. Every student will participate, earning 20 points for their house simply by performing their one-minute speech. From there, one winner from each tutor group will progress to the house finals. Year group winners will earn a whopping 1,000 points for their house, with the overall winner securing an additional 1,000 points! With over 5,000 points up for grabs, let your voice be heard and be the change!

This Tuesday, our Year 10 students were treated to a thought-provoking talk from representatives of the prestigious law firm Lewis Silkin. The talk provided students with an inside look at the diverse opportunities within the legal profession. The speakers shared personal experiences and highlighted the pathways into the legal field, including academic routes, apprenticeship options and work experience. Thank you to Mr Afriye for arranging the session.

On Wednesday, 60 of our Year 10 students participated in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, a programme designed to build young people's confidence and communication skills through public speaking. This nationwide initiative gives students the tools they need to express themselves effectively and tackle real-world issues through the power of speech. Students learned valuable lessons in public speaking, including how to structure a speech, engage an audience, and convey their message with impact. The day concluded with students delivering individual speeches they had written themselves. Seven students were selected to perform their speeches. From this group, one student will be chosen to represent us at the Regional Finals in March. Congratulations to our winners: Maddie, Niamh, Justice, Sophie, Lucia, Charis, and Marques. Thank you to Ms Ruby and Mr Kalatch for supporting the day.

Thank you to Equality Club who wrote this week’s PSHE lesson. They focused on protected characteristics, looking at the law on equality and discrimination and analysed scenarios of this in practice. Feedback from the pupils and staff was incredibly positive.

Thank you to all the families who attended our Year 9 parents’ evening on Thursday. Parents were given the opportunity to meet with teachers and discuss progress and attendance was excellent. A date for your diaries: Year 10 parents’ evening is on Thursday 13th February at 4pm.
