Students engage in STEM workshops
Students in Year7 and Year 10 enjoyed STEM workshops this week.
Netball triumph
Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Year 8 and 9 netball teams who both beat Archbishop Tenison’s on Monday afternoon. Despite the cold and very wet evening, Year 8 went on to win 6-0, with Tianni awarded the player of the match, and Year 9 finished with a score of 5-1, with Kelly picked as the outstanding performer.
STEM sports day
On Tuesday, 15 enthusiastic Year 7 students attended the STEM and Sports Day at Selhurst Park Stadium with Mr Alabi. The day was packed with engaging activities to inspire a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Students participated in three dynamic workshops led by CreativeHUT, and Cognizant volunteers. The day culminated in an exciting stadium tour, giving students a behind-the-scenes look at Selhurst Park. The event aimed to encourage students to consider these areas for their future studies and careers: it was an enriching and energising day for all who attended.
STEM career workshop
On Wednesday, students in Years 7 and 8 participated in a STEM virtual career workshop organised by LetsLocalise and Cognizant. The session, led by Conrad Crampton, a Senior Big Data Developer at Cognizant, explored emerging technology careers and the essential skills needed to excel in the future workforce.
The workshop addressed vital Gatsby Benchmarks:
- Benchmark 2: Offering insights into career opportunities and labour market trends.
- Benchmark 4: Connecting STEM curriculum content to real-world careers.
- Benchmark 5: Providing an invaluable encounter with an industry professional.
Conrad's presentation equipped students with strategies for future success and inspired them to consider diverse STEM career paths. It was a thought-provoking session that underscored the importance of staying ahead in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
Thursday’s IGD’s Employability workshop allowed our Year 10 students to develop their skills for the world of work and gain insight into careers in the food and consumer goods industry.
Globe theatre workshop
This week also saw The Globe Players deliver three captivating performances of An Inspector Calls. This timeless classic was brought to life for Years 8, 9 and 11, offering an incredible opportunity to experience live theatre. This play was selected to align with curriculum studies, enriching students' understanding of literature while inspiring a love for the arts. The cast spoke to me afterwards, stating the behaviour of students was exceptional and the questions, especially from Year 8, showed incredible insight. We look forward to the unforgettable performances of A Christmas Carol and Macbeth. Thank you to Mr Gardner for organising the event.
